2011 Electric Guitar Giveaway
sponsored by
Lightning
Joe's Guitar Heaven
2011 Winner is Mike Madden of Nipomo!
Mike
was excited to be the winner of his new guitar even though, ironically, he is a
drummer. Mike played drums with Columbia Records and Orange County California
based artists "Jamie
and The Jury" in the mid '60s. Jamie and The Jury had records on the
radio, toured the US, and hung out with rock royalty of the time (The Byrds,
Buffalo Springfield, Paul Revere and the Raiders, etc.), it all ending for Mike
when he was drafted. Mike later played with a very popular San Jose based '50s
and '60s band, "Shaboom",
for 26 years. Now retired from his real job and Shaboom being history, Mike may
start playing music again locally. Congratulations to Mike for winning the 2011
Unfinished Business Guitar Giveaway sponsored by Lightning Joe's Guitar Heaven
and best wishes for Mike getting back into playing music!
2012 Guitar Giveaway
Lightning
Joe's Guitar Heaven at 100 East Branch in the Village of Arroyo
Grande will again sponsor the Unfinished Business Guitar Giveaway. In 2012

enter as often as you like. However, the email address of each entrant will be

recipient of Unfinished Business newsletters throughout 2012 to win. The winning
entry slip will be drawn at the big '60s Rock 'n' Roll New Year's Eve Bash on 12

Ivy's Fight To Get Back!

Ivy Update
April 2011
Ivy is still coming to Unfinished Business gigs whenever she can get in
(she can't wait
until she turns 21!) and we hear she is making tremendous progress "Getting
Back" to where she once was before she experienced heart failure back in
2008 at age 16. Ivy and her Mom, Melinda, have been sending out emails
about the significant progress Ivy has been making on the treadmill, staying on
for as long as 15 minutes! She is on the treadmill now 3 times a week gaining
more endurance each time. You go girl!
Ivy Graduated from San Luis Obispo High June 18, 2010!
“The entire stadium
cheered as one student walked across the stage to receive her diploma.
Ivy Alvarado, who suffered cardiac arrest in the summer of 2008,
graduated after studying with a home-hospital teacher during more than
a year of physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy to
regain her ability to speak and walk.
She was meant to graduate a
year ago but was convalescing from the cardiac arrest that doctors
originally thought would leave her with severe brain damage.
On Friday, the senior class
cheered for her as if she were always with them.”
San Luis Obispo Tribune, June 19, 2010
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
See article below regarding the benefit held for Ivy Alvarado on January 30,
2010.
It is estimated that more than $40,000 has been collected to date to help
Ivy with her
needs that are necessary to help her recover from the heart attack that struck her
at
age 16.
Ivy returned from getting aggressive physical therapy treatment at the
Brucker
Biofeedback Center in Miami, Florida.
Click
here to check out the Brucker Biofeedback Center.
This treatment was
made possible by the benefit and all who contributed.
Thank you to everyone who supported the benefit for Ivy. The proceeds from the
benefit have enabled Ivy to be treated at Brucker and will enable her to receive
further
treatments that we all hope and pray will enable Ivy to "get
back" to where she was
before her heart attack, when she was a healthy,
fully functional young lady with much
life to live and much to accomplish. We
also want to see her dancing her shoes off
at future Unfinished Business gigs
like she did before.
Please keep Ivy in your thoughts and
prayers. If anyone would like to
follow Ivy's progress on her blog, click
Electric
Guitar Giveaway Winner!
All during 2010, Unfinished Business collected entry
forms from '60s rock 'n' roll fans at our shows who wanted to win a fantastic
Sterling by Music Man AX40 electric guitar.
The drawing was finally held at our New Years Eve Bash and the lucky
winner was Eddie Hamel of Oceano. Eddie, a 17 year old
Arroyo Grande High School senior, has an interest in becoming a screenwriter
after he graduates from college. Eddie is very interested in learning
to play the guitar, citing his favorite artists as being Cold Play, Simple
Plan, and 3 Days Grace. He says he also likes Unfinished Business, having
seen the band at the Grover Beach Summer Concert last July when he bought a UB
CD (thanks Eddie!) and entered the guitar giveaway by filling out a single entry
slip.
Thanks one more time to our 2010 guitar sponsor, Praxis
Musical Instruments, Inc., of
Orange,
California,
and special thanks again to the Ernie Ball Company of San
Luis Obispo for arranging for the sponsorship.
Congratulations Eddie!
Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame - A UB Close Encounter
With A Music Industry Icon
Unfinished Business congratulates The Ventures (Bob
Bogle, Nokie Edwards, Gerry McGee, Mel Taylor, Don Wilson) on their recent selection to enter the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Unfinished Business was the support act for the legendary surf instrumental group at The Clark Center in October, 2006 - a true brush with greatness for the local '60s rock and roll band. Check out the collection of photos from that inspiring evening. The Ventures
were inducted along with Madonna, John
Mellencamp, Leonard Cohen, and The Dave Clark Five in New York on March 10, 2008, at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in NY City. The Museum is located in Cleveland, Ohio.
Their induction was long overdue for the largest selling instrumental group of all time.
Unfinished Business Flattered in a Recent News Article
The Foxen News, which is distributed among the neighbors of Foxenwood Estates, is featuring Unfinished Business on the front page of the Jan - Feb, 2008 edition. The flattering article, penned by the publication's editor, James Pepper, was the result of Mr. Pepper seeing the band at the January 25 performance at the Loading Dock in Old
Orcutt. This rare Santa Barbara County club appearance for the '60s tribute band was a
fulfilled evening for everyone in attendance and, evidently, inspiring enough to get the editor to write his unsolicited review.
As the band's fan base takes them out of the area more and more, Unfinished Business has always
maintained that it is their recognition in the community and the support of the fans on the Central Coast that make it all worthwhile. Thank you, James, for helping us always remember that fact.
San Luis Obispo Calendar
The city of San Luis Obispo and
the SLO Downtown Business Association honored Unfinished Business by including a photo of the band in their newly published 2008 Events Calendar. The picture, taken live during a main stage performance at
the SLO Farmer's Market graces the "April" page, reminding all of us that the music of Unfinished Business is a big part of this Central Coast community, a city renowned for its dedication to all the arts.
SLO Tribune honors Unfinished Business with a great article
The San Luis Obispo Tribune flatters Unfinished Business with an
article about the band in the December 27, 2007 edition. The Pulitzer
worthy article was penned by Tribune Journalist, Patrick Pemberton.
Pemberton visited an Unfinished Business rehearsal and had this to say:
"During The Beatles 'Get Back', (Terry) Lawless nailed Billy Preston's
famous organ solo while (Ed) Miller perfected the guitar riffs and (Jim) Witt
supplied the driving bass line on a vintage Hofner, like the one used by Paul
McCartney. The band was loud and tight, offering four-part harmonies that set it
apart from other cover bands, with the energy of a band of
20-somethings."
Check out the accompanying video on the Trib's website. Our mark of success is to be recognized in our own community. We are both honored and humbled. Thanks to the Tribune and Patrick.
Tips For Family of Janay
Bradley
Unfinished Business would like to thank
everyone in attendance at the Village of Arroyo Grande "Branch Street
Independence Day" Celebration on January 4, 2009, who contributed
"tips" to benefit the family of 6 month old Janay Bradley, who
tragically died at a day care facility in San Luis Obispo on Monday, December
29, 2008. Those tips, as well as the profits from the sale of Unfinished
Business t-shirts, totaled $213. Our thoughts and prayers are with Janay's
family.
"Tips For April"
Thanks to everyone who attended the Unfinished Business concert on the Main Stage at the San Luis Obispo Farmers Market on Thursday, August 9th. And a special thanks to those who tipped the band because all tips, which totaled $773.89, were donated to April, a Central Coast woman who has inoperable cancer and is not expected to live more than another month or two. April is a single mother with a 14 year old daughter and they have no insurance. We are sure the money will go to very good use to help sustain April and her daughter during this very difficult time. Thanks again for your generosity and please keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
posted 8/10/07
Note (Dec 18, 2007): April lost her courageous fight against cancer this morning. Our thoughts and prayers go out to her family, especially her daughter, Destiny. We will miss you, April.
